Toronto Tabla Ensemble presents: Baithak Series #1
The Toronto Tabla Ensemble is launching a series of intimate concerts in keeping with the traditional ‘Baithak’ format. A baithak is an intimate gathering that typically includes music or dance performance and refreshments. The first of the series will be held at Bavia Arts Cultural Center on October 17th at 7:00 PM. The feature will be a tabla solo in the Benares style by Montreal based tabla player, Shawn Mativetsky. Exponent of the Benares gharana, and disciple of the legendary Pandit Sharda Sahai, Shawn Mativetsky is a highly sought-after tabla performer and educator. He is active in the promotion of the tabla and North Indian classical music through lectures, workshops, and performances across Canada and internationally. Based in Montreal, Shawn teaches tabla and percussion at McGill University. Shawn will be accompanied on the violin by Parmela Attariwala. The concert will open with a tabla solo by Razak Pirani, a student of Toronto Tabla Ensemble’s artistic director, Ritesh Das. Razak is a teacher and performing member with the Toronto Tabla Ensemble and is a student at the University of Toronto.
