Tabla Maestro Ritesh Das and JUNO nominated Toronto Tabla Ensemble launch Branch in London, Ontario
Artistic Director and award winning composer Ritesh Das is proud to announce the launch of the London branch with classes starting in January 2024. “I moved to London from Toronto during the pandemic when it was a challenge to start in-person classes. But now, three years later, we found the perfect place to host our classes, in a beautiful park setting at Springbank Park.”
The launch of the London branch will commence with an Open House on Saturday 20th, 2024 free and open to the public to learn more about North Indian tabla classes with Ritesh Das. There will be a performance by the Toronto Tabla Youth Ensemble, featuring young artists between 10 and 16 years of age who have been trained by Ritesh Das and his senior students.
Ritesh Das and the Toronto Tabla Ensemble have crossed Canada multiple times, and mesmerized audiences in India and Australia with their intricate grooves and modern, high-energy approach. They have released nine original studio albums that have garnered Global Music Awards, Independent Music Awards and Ethnic Media Awards. Their 2020 album Bhumika earned the group a nomination for Best World and Best Instrumental Group at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Ritesh Das’ compositions have been licensed for commercials, films, and as the theme music for CBC Radio’s daily Metro Morning.
“When I first came to Toronto in 1987 no one had heard of tabla.” says Das. “I started teaching and collaborating with other artists and worked hard to put tabla on the map of Canada through education and music creation. Now, thirty years later, I’m having the same experience here in London and am looking forward to seeing tabla flourish in Southwest Ontario.”
Weekly classes will be held at Springbank Community Centre on 205 Wonderland Rd. South on Saturdays from 12:30 – 2:30 pm and is geared towards new beginning students.
